Alkane Naming

Alkane Naming

Introduction

As we have been looking at visualizing molecules, some of the examples are of Alkalies. I have built these using molymods from Methane to Propane

Rule for Carbon : Hydrogen

H = 2C + 2

Table

Name Formula Carbon Hydrogen Weight
- - - - -
Methane CH_4 1 4 16
Ethane C_2H_6 2 6 30
Propane C_3H_8 3 8 44
Butane C_4H_ 10 4 10 58
Pentane C_5H_ 12 5 12 72
- - - - -

Weight Calculation

As :-

  • Carbon has mass of 12
  • Hydrogen has a mass of 1

We take the number of each atom and add these up so
12 + 4 (as there are 4 Hydrogen atoms)
= 16

If we had 16 grams of Methane it would be 1mol (mole)
